Govt worried over unique ID cards to Bangladeshis
Chidambaram urged the Census officials to remain vigilant.

New Delhi: The Union Home Minister strikes a note of caution on illegal Bangladeshi migrants, saying the Centre needs to ensure they don't get unique IDs meant for Indians.

The Home ministry is worried about Bangladeshis getting Unique ID cards. That is because the Indo-Bangladesh border is porous. And, there are more chances of people crossing over.

Unlike the Indo-Pakistan border which is fenced, Chidambaram said that field officers who will be conducting the census on the ground have been cautioned against the problem and asked to ensure no duplication.

Chidambaram said that out of the 3331 border towns and villages in India, the ones on the Indo-Bangladesh border pose maximum problem of people crossing over the border to get themselves enumerated and, the Indo-Pak border does not pose such a problem since it is fenced.

The Home Minister pointed out that field officers who will be conducting the National Population Register census at the basic level have been cautioned against the problem.

He assured that a de-duplication process will be conducted to insure there is one unique number for one person and inflated enumeration does not occur.
