The 35-year-old Haas won the tournament in 2006.
No. 2-seeded John Isner had 20 aces and held every service game in the final two sets to beat fellow American Michael Russell, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
No. 3 Kei Nishikori, No. 4 Kevin Anderson of South Africa, and No. 8 Lleyton Hewitt also advanced.
