Happy New Year
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsAs we say goodbye to 2005 and welcome 2006 let us all hope that the new year brings a lot of happiness to all of us.

The year gone by gave us some really historic moments most of which were not the kind that people want.

The year started under the shadow of the devastating tsunami that claimed over 2 lakh lives and left many more homeless. As the nations affected by the worst natural disater in recorded history pick up the pieces and move ahead let us spare a thought for those who lost their all to the monstrous waves.

India, too, was affected by the tsunami and a lot is required to bring life back to normal in the devastated areas.

The monsoon fury in India moved from the eastern states to Maharastra and Tamil Nadu with Mumbai and Chennai being the worst affected. For Chennai the floods came as a double whammy after the tsunami and even Mumbai experienced its worst monsoon.

Two days of torrential rains almost brought the financial capital of India to its knees but the spirit of Mumbai was not browbeaten. The city of dream was back on its feet in couple of days with every section of the metro, from the residents of the posh Pali Hill to the slum dwellers, contributing their might to fight nature's fury.

But the same spirit was found lacking in USA when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. For almost two weeks not even the President of US, George Bush, had any idea of what was going on. Looting, rape and murder became the order of the day as the authorities found themselves clueless. Perhaps Bush can send them for a crash course in disaster management to Mumbai.

Mother nature was not finished yet as an earthquake hit India and Pakistan on October 8 killing thousands.

But it was not only natural disasters that hit India as in the latter half of the year Parliament was shamed by the conduct of some of its members who were caught accepting cash in lieu of asking questions in the House.

The House took a historic and prompt action in expelling the tainted members and restored some faith of the common people in it.

One more historic event in politics was the dethroning of Lalu. Although there is still aalu in samosa but there is no Lalu in Bihar courtesy Nitish Kumar.

Indo-Pak peace talks showed some progress with both the countries toning down their rehtoric a little bit.

Sporting arena ,too, had its share of drama with cricket leading from the front.

The spat between coach Greg Chappell and former captain Sourav Ganguly was the stuff that Bollywood looks for. Ganguly's brand of politics would have even put all our veteran leaders to shame.

Ganguly tried every trick in and out of the books to make himself larger than the game forgetting that it's he who is mortal not the game.

Though Ganguly's political connections and his begging before the powers to be in the cricket board finally got him a place in Team India.

But under the leadership of new captain Rahul Dravid Team India went from strength to strength defeating convincingly the Lankans both in the ODIs and the Tests. The team also drew the ODI series against the Proteas.

Sachin Tendulkar finally surpassed the world record of 34 Test centuries of Sunil Gavaskar. A few days before this feat another great batsman, Brain Lara, crossed Allan's border of maximum Test runs.

On the tennis field Sania Mirza came as a wiff of fresh year to make a mark on the court with her game and off it with her attitude.

As the year was coming to an end the bomb blasts in delhi and the shooting in Bangalore brought home the chilling reminder that man remains man's worst enemy.first published:December 31, 2005, 19:35 ISTlast updated:December 31, 2005, 19:35 IST
