So far, there have been no reports of humans being infected with bird flu.

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry is taking preventive steps to arrest the spread of bird flu, which is confirmed in Birbhum, South Dinajpur and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal.

There are 55 teams of the West Bengal Animal Resources Department fanned out across 105 villages in Rampurhat for culling operations.

The teams will go from door to door, not leaving out private and backyard poultry farms.

Post-culling, the dead birds would be buried. Ten spots have been selected for such burials.

Animal Resources Development Minister Anisur Rehman has said over 3.5 lakh birds in Birbhum and 26,000 in South Dinajpur district would be culled. Rehman has also assured compensation to poultry farmers after the culling

No human cases has been reported so far.

This is the first time that avian flu has broken out in West Bengal. There have been previous outbreaks in Manipur and Maharashtra but like this one, they too were localized.

As a preventive measure, the Union Health Ministry is sending 20,000 Tamiflu tablets on Wednesday.

The Ministry is also sending 2500 sets of personal protective equipment, consisting of gloves and headgear, to the affected areas. 2500 n-95 masks will be sent, along with semi-automatic analysers. Isolation wards have been set up in Birhum.
