Heliports (a landing and takeoff place for a helicopter) will be constructed in the three districts of North Bengal, that is Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Raiganj. According to Local 18 Bengal, Darjeeling has always been an attraction for tourists. The construction of heliports will help boost tourism in Darjeeling. Till now, there was no alternative except the toy train to explore the beauty of the mountains in Darjeeling. The Toy Train was one of the major attractions of this place. With the construction of Heliports, tourism is expected to get a boost. Tourists might get an aerial view of the mountains in helicopter rides. They might find it safe too because of the instances of landslides and other problems while going through mountainous regions.
Chairman of the West Bengal Eco Tourism Department Raj Basu said in an interview, “Heli tourism has taken a very important place all over the world. In North Bengal, the state government has taken up a project to launch heli tourism in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Raiganj. If this helicopter service starts, it will open new opportunities for tourism in the North.”
One tourist named Rupon Roy also expressed his thoughts regarding this issue. As per the tourist, “If the state government starts helicopter service, there will be a lot of benefits. We have heard many cases of people getting stuck in landslides in the mountains.” Rupon added that it becomes difficult to go to the mountains when it rains. “It will be great if this service is launched in that place,” he concluded.
With the construction of Heliports in Darjeeling, not only Indian tourists but also foreign commuters will benefit tremendously. There will be a lot of facilities in the cross-border tourism sector if the helicopter service is started in Raiganj too. Cross-border tourism can be defined as the provision of hassle-free movement of people in conflict-affected regions. This creates deeper understanding and relationship-building.
In addition to this scheme, many other plans are started from time to time to create an easy experience for tourists to travel and experience Darjeeling.
