Guwahati: Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer Kumud Chandra Kalita, who was arrested in connection with the over Rs 2,000-crore scam in the Assam Social Welfare Department, was remanded in 12 days' police custody by a special court in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Kalita was absconding since February 2017 before being arrested by the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of Assam police.
Acting on a tip off, police picked up Kalita from near the Gauhati High Court premises on Friday evening. Assam police had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh to anyone who could give information on Kalita’s whereabouts.
Kumud Kalita, 58, served as the director of the Social Welfare department in 2013-14 during the Congress regime.
Suspended on charges of corruption, Kalita is one of the 11 accused in connection with the multi-crore rupee scam. So far, eight officials have been arrested by the Vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of Assam Police.
Kalita was arrested by anti-corruption branch police station under Sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC and Sections 13(1)(d) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
In a separate development, a special court in Guwahati remanded contractors Pijush Kanti Dey and Ajit Thakuria to three days in police custody in connection with the Rs 700 crore agriculture scam which took place in 2013.
The duo was arrested by state CID sleuths on Monday. Sources said the two contractors had swindled massive government funds in the name of procuring pesticides and insecticides meant for farmers in Morigaon district.
