New Delhi: An Inter-Ministerial Group on coal will be deciding the fate of 58 coal blocks on Wednesday. The Inter-Ministerial Group on Tuesday started reviewing development of blocks allotted to public sector firms and examined 13 cases.
"The public sector firms like Maharashtra State Mining Corp, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Orissa Mining Corp presented the status of their mines before the IMG today," an official in the Coal Ministry said. In total the public sector firms made presentations of 13 coal blocks before the IMG on the first day of the two-day meeting, the official said.
PSUs which presented their cases before the panel include Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Company, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, Assam State Mineral Development Corp, Meghalaya State Mineral Development Corp, Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corp. The remaining PSUs like West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Corp will make presentation before the IMG on Thursday.
"The presentations with regard to the remaining 20 coal blocks allocated to the public sector firms will be made before the IMG tomorrow," he said. IMG had recently concluded the scrutiny of 31 coal blocks allotted to 51 private firms. IMG on coal blocks is likely to finalise its recommendations with regard to 33 mines allocated to public sector firms by October 20.
In September, the government had accepted the recommendations of the IMG, which had suggested de-allocation of 13 mines and deduction of bank guarantees (BGs) of 14 allottees. A total of 58 mines were issued show cause notices for their failure to develop blocks within stipulated timeline. The government had formed the IMG in July to review the progress of coal blocks allocated to companies for captive use.
