The case against the 17-year-old boy, who allegedly fatally knocked down two persons with his high-end car, has taken a new turn with Pune police forming a special team for conducting an internal inquiry against some officials investigating the case. An officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) has been given the responsibility to investigate potential lapses in the protocol by officials of the Yerwada police station in the hours following the incident.
The team has seized the CCTV footage of the police station, the accident site and the pubs the minor visited and a probe is underway.
As per the initial probe, it has been found out that after the accident, an API and PI from Yerwada police arrived at the scene, but did not inform the wireless control room.
According to sources, if the cops had informed the control room, the deputy commissioner of police on night round could have been alerted, but the inspectors failed to do so.
It was only in the early morning that top officers learned about the accident. Action is expected to be taken against some of the officers on duty.
A Porsche, allegedly driven by the minor son of the city’s prominent real estate developer, fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers in the city in the early hours of Sunday. Police claimed that the 17-year-old was drunk at the time of the accident.
The case soon gained media scrutiny, and with it emerged allegations of possible preferential treatment given to the accused minor. It was alleged that police underplayed the horrific nature of the incident in the first write-ups and delayed the boy’s medical examination to establish his blood alcohol level by 8 hours.
It was alleged that the body was fed ‘pizza and biryani’ at the police station to ensure that the alcohol level in his body was reduced.
The special team will also look into allegations that the minor’s family, who own a prominent real estate business in the city, was trying to meddle with the FIR and shift the blame on the driver. Some reports also claimed that an MLA had also gone to the police station to ensure no FIR was registered in the case.
Additionally, the team will also probe the allegation of harassment of the family of victims Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta – the 24-year-old software professionals who were killed. If found guilty, some top officers may face action by the home ministry
Meanwhile, the mother of the accused appealed to the police to “protect” her son after a video purportedly featuring him, boasting about how he got away with the accident, went viral.
In a video message, the teen’s mother stressed that the clip had nothing to do with her son and that it was fake.
A rap song purportedly featuring the teenager, boasting about how he got away with the car crash, went viral on social media, but Pune police have clarified that it was a fake account and that the teenager had no role in the video.
Later, it was found that the rap video was of a social media influencer.
