India is gathering intelligence on the second rung leadership in NSCN(K), with the terrorist group facing a leadership crisis. This comes as the leader of the group, SS Khaplang, has turned 75 and is reportedly not in good health.
There is uncertainty over who will succeed Khaplang as the leader of the insurgent group. The veteran leader of NSCN(K) was recently hospitalised due to health issues. According to sources, Myanmar is helping India with intelligence gathering on the issue.
During his visit to Myanmar last week, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval asked the country’s leadership to bring the terrorist group to negotiating table. This comes over a week after the government declared NSCN(K) as an unlawful organisation following a Cabinet meeting.
The organisation was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. "In recent times, a lot of explosions and ambushes have been carried out by the organisation. The government of India, after elaborate consideration, has decided to declare NSCN(K) an unlawful organisation for five years," Prasad said.
SS Khaplang heads the NSCN (Khaplang) faction while Sumi, a resident of Zhunehboto in Nagaland, holds charge of the armed wing of the group.
In 1988, the NSCN split into two factions - the NSCN(K) and NSCN(IM) led jointly by Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah. The NSCN(IM) has already struck a peace accord with India.
