BHUBANESWAR: A major beautification overhaul has been planned for the City. Keeping an eye on the 99th Indian Science Congress from January 3 to 7 it has been decided to pave streets, plant saplings and give special attention to make arterial roads garbage-free. With the Prime Minister and prominent personalities like Nobel Laureates and scientists likely to be here for the event, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to give the City a cleaner look. As BMC does not have the financial resources to involve in the beautification process directly, it will outsource the work and monitor it. Around 22 private companies have been roped in. Of the several new areas identified for beautification, the stretch between Rabindra Mandap and 120 Battalion and Kalinga Hospital and KIIT will be given special attention. The faded street walls will get a fresh coat of paint. Sanitation too will be improved. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed BMC to make the City garbage-free much before the dignitaries arrive. BMC is working on the proposal and will also hold talks with Residential Welfare Associations to create awareness on garbage disposal. “Sweeping will be taken up twice daily,” said Priyadarshi Mohapatra, Deputy Commissioner, BMC. Specific directions have also been given to maintain market places properly and install dustbins.
