Srinagar: Security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir and killed four terrorists, hours after violent clashes claimed eight lives and kept voters away from a crucial bypoll in Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.

"A major infiltration bid from across the LoC was foiled by the Army troops in Keran sector yesterday (Sunday) evening," Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told IANS.

"A search operation is going on in the area," he said.

Earlier on Sunday, militants fired at a police station in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, but fled after the police retaliated. Kulgam is part of South Kashmir's Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency for which bypolls will be held on April 12.

The attack came after rampaging mobs took to streets straddling Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts, perpetrating violence and arson, even setting ablaze a polling station and attempting to set on fire two others, amid a boycott called by the separatists.
