Chief Minister N Rangasamy announced that an integrated textile park would be set up in Puducherry as part of the government’s ongoing efforts for industrial development aimed at progressive change in socio-economic spheres.
The announcement was made just after he unfurled the national flag at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex on the occasion of nation’s 66th Independence Day here on Wednesday.
Revealing that the new industrial policy of the government would be announced soon, he said multi-product special economic zones would be set up in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. It is also proposed to launch skill development mission, which would impart training to about 20,200 persons in five years through skill schools, he added.
Insurance extended
The Chief Minister said the provision of sophisticated equipment to specialty departments like a multi-slice CT scanner and to strengthen blood bank, and the trauma care centre at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute was proposed.
“It is also proposed to provide specialty services for orthopaedic and cardiac surgery to the people of Puducherry by availing of the services of expertise from Chennai to conduct surgeries,” he said. Rangasamy said a general nursing and midwifery school is planned to be launched this year in Karaikal, and a new programme to create awareness about non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hyper tension etc, is also in the offing.
The CM revealed that his government has also planned to extend the health insurance scheme, which is operative in Karaikal region to Mahe and Yanam regions.
Waiver of loans
The Chief Minister said that Rs 485.70 crore has been earmarked in the budget under Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan to upgrade the living condition of Scheduled Castes. He added that it was proposed to extend marriage assistance to 1,000 Scheduled Caste brides in the current financial year.
He went on to say that plans were afoot to waive the loans availed of by fishermen for repairing boats under the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Tsunami Rehabilitation Package’, and also the housing and other cooperative loans availed of from the Fisheries Department.
He said concrete measures have been taken by the government to improve the quality of education viz., elementary, secondary and higher education, and importance has also been given to develop the educational infrastructure facilities and to fill up the existing teaching vacancies in government schools.
“Priority is attached to providing standard nutritious food, and pure and safe drinking water to students in government and government-aided schools. To facilitate the easy transportation of students, the government has proposed to ply 50 more student special buses,” he added.
