The state government has granted an in-principle approval for a project to construct an international trade fair complex and a convention centre at Kakkanad.
The Rs 112-crore project being implemented by the Kinfra, in association with the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), is coming up near Info Park, Kinfra Park and the proposed Smart City project. ITPO, an agency under the Union Government, has a mandate to promote foreign trade and exports.
The complex is envisaged as an ideal venue for trade fairs, exhibitions and product-launching. “The centre will have facilities such as food court, shopping mall and VIP lounge. It will be developed as a hub of all trade fair exhibitions held in Kerala,” the district administration said in a press release on Tuesday.
Proximity to the international airport and the Seaport-Airport Road makes Kakkanad the ideal location for the proposed complex and convention centre. Since Kinfra already owns land there, land acquisition is also not needed. A total of 25 acres will be earmarked for the complex, while multiplex restaurants would be constructed in the remaining area.
“The government has entrusted the Kinfra managing director to conduct a study and prepare a report in this regard,” the authorities said.
