CHENNAI: It’s official. The Indian Premier League (IPL) eliminator and final matches at the Chepauk stadium here will be held before a full house. That includes the three brand new stands with a capacity of 13,100 seats that are currently under seal. The Madras High Court on Thursday permitted the TN Cricket Association (TNCA) to open and use the I, J and K galleries in the M A Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk — which were previously sealed off following an order by the Chennai Corporation — for the eliminator and final matches of the IPL scheduled to be held on Friday and Sunday, respectively. A vacation bench comprising justices V Dhanapalan and T Mathivanan gave the green light while passing interim orders on a writ petition from the TNCA seeking to quash an order dated August 8 last year of the Chennai Corporation, restraining it from using the new stands. The petitioner had made out a prima facie case, the judges said and granted the interim injunction for a week. The bench directed the TNCA to give proper undertaking to the Corporation with regard to the safety, security and maintenance of the three stands and to pay necessary taxes. At least 13,000 spectators would lose the opportunity to watch the finale live if the three stands were not opened, the TNCA had argued.
