CHENNAI: Three dogs that were being raised by a woman at an apartment complex in Puzhithivakkam, were allegedly poisoned by her neighbour, who was irritated by their barks, on Monday evening. According to Jeyam, a homemaker, who had obtained licences from the Corporation to raise six stray mongrel dogs that were rescued, her neighbour KN Shanmugam always hated dogs barking. “Last night, I saw him put a bowl of rice in front of the dogs. Before my daughter and I managed to get the food away from the dogs, they consumed it,” she said.Minutes later, three dogs convulsed and died, said Dawn Williams, General Manager of the Blue Cross of India, who had helped the woman adopt the dogs. The Madipakkam Police, who were reluctant to file a case initially, later accepted the complaint and filed an FIR against Shanmugam, who is also the head of the apartment complex association. A police official reasoned that the delay was because of an earlier complaint against Jeyam by the association, alleging that her dogs were posing risk to children in the building. “Once that issue was sorted out and she showed us the licences, we took up her complaint,” the police official said.Jeyam’s daughter Tulsi Bhuvaneshwaran said, “In the last five years, he (Shanmugam) used to lock his own dog up on the terrace everytime it barked. Our dogs would sometimes have their food missing or suffered wounds from stones.” Dawn Williams also said that the rice in the bowl that had been given to the dogs, turned green, indicating some form of poison. Police officials said that the corpses had been sent to TANUVAS and a visceral postmortem exam was to be conducted. Based on the results, an arrest could be made.
