Jammu: More than 40 members of the AIIMS coordination committee on Tuesday took their turn as the chain hunger strike entered fifth consecutive day on Tuesday.

The chain hunger strike launched by the AIIMS coordination committee, an amalgam of more than 70 religious, social, political, business and civil society groups spearheading agitation in support of setting up of an AIIMS in Jammu region, entered fifth day on Tuesday.

Around 40 members from various groups, including SOS International, an organisation of the PoK refugees on Tuesday took their turn to sit on strike.

"We have already extended our support to the cause of setting up of AIIMS in Jammu. Our organisation, SOS International which has been representing PoK refugees is also a part of the AIIMS coordination committee, today we decided to sit for the hunger strike", Rajiv Chuni, president, SOS International told.

Panun Kashmir, an organisation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits (KPs) which is also a part of AIIMS coordination committee was schedule to sit for the huger strike on Tuesday, however their turn was postponed.

"We sat for the relay hunger strike for few hours today as we have already extended our full support to the cause of the setting up of AIIMS in Jammu, however our turn to sit for the strike for the whole day was postponed as activists of SOS International wanted to sit for the strike today", Agnishekar, Convenor of Panun Kashmir, said.

To press for their demand of the institute to be brought back to Jammu, the AIIMS coordination committee, supported by the members of other civil society groups, had started its indefinite dharna and chain hunger strike on June 12.

"The chain hunger strike will continue indefinitely until and unless our demand of setting up of AIIMS in Jammu is not met," Sharma said.

The coordination committee members, supported by Congress and other Jammu-based parties, are on hunger strike in front of Maharaja Hari Singh's statue at Tawi Bridge since Friday.

"The people of Jammu are being pushed to the wall by the very same people who once claimed to be their soul voice," a member of the committee said.

Accusing the government of discriminating against the Jammu region, the coordination committee has decided to continue with its chain hunger strike unless the Centre and the state government make a formal announcement of the return of AIIMS to Jammu.
