Miscreants struck at a jewellery store at Vasanth nagar in KPHB colony in the wee hours of Thursday and decamped with one-and-half kilo silver. They gained entry into the store after making a hole in the shutter of the shop but had to flee after alerted locals started gathering outside the shop, Vasavi jewellers.
According to the police, The offenders made a hole to the shutter with the help of gas cutters and entered the shop. They tied a curtain, one end at a tree and the other to the shop, to cover the shop from passersby and to ensure that no one comes to know what was happening inside the shop.
However, a watchman of a nearby apartment, Pentaiah, noticed the curtain and smelling foul play, alerted the jewellery store owner Ram Mohan.
Ram Mohan and some other locals reached the store and noticed movement in the shop and alerted the police. The offenders also suspected that locals were gathering outside the shop and fled in the Innova car in which they had come.
Police reached the place after the offenders fled. The shop owner told the police that the vehicle had a registration number AP 9 BJ 1278. Police investigation revealed that the vehicle belongs to a resident of Vivekananda Colony. However, police ruled out the vehicle owner’s involvement and said the offenders might have used a fake registration plate.
According to the shop owner, over 30 tola gold was kept in the chest. The offenders tried to even cut open the chest but by then locals had reached there averting a major theft. The offenders, however, managed to steal one-and-half kilo silver.
