Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and Opposition leader Nawaz Sharif called off the Long March after the government announced that sacked Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry along with other judges would be reinstated soon.
Addressing a massive public rally in Gujranwala on Monday morning Sharif thanked the people of Pakistan and his supporters for forcing to government to restore Justice Chaudhry and also for scrapping Governor's Rule imposed in the Punjab province.
"I thank you all for your love. From Karachi to Khyber, I thank you all. We will also solve other issues. I thank my supporters and you. You waited for us and today we are making this announcement in Gujranwala and this is being written in the golden words in the history of Gujranwala," said Sharif.
The PML-N chief welcomed the government's decision and said that the Long March is now a victory march.
Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday morning announced that Chief Chaudhry will be reinstated on March 21
Gilani also announced that all other sacked judges would also be reinstated. Governor's Rule imposed in the Punjab province will be scrapped.
The government also ordered release of all protesters held in connection with the Long March and lifted prohibitory order under Section 144.
Gilani has assured that the government will appeal against the Supreme Court order against the Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif, banning them from active politics.
"I assure that the government will file an appeal against the Supreme Court's order against Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif. I also order all state government's to withdraw Section 144 and release all the lawyers and politicians arrested during the Long March," said Gilani addressing the nation.
