HYDERABAD: The opening night of Hydourite 2012, a 100-day festivity that will celebrate the spirit of Hyderabad, is set to open on June 2 with the percussion performance titled ‘ Percussion Fantasy’. Presented by Dr S Karthik, the master percussionist will enthral audience with his dexterity over the‘Ghantam’, an earthenware pot that is used as a musical instrument. Blending traditional and modern sounds together, the evening promises to be a grand event that will pave the way for the next 99 days. Dr S Karthik is known as a connoisseur in Carnatic music and is also regarded as one of the best percussionists in the country. He has often collaborated with big names in the music industry like Ilayaraja, A R Rahman, Harris Jayaraj, Bharadwaj and Vidhyasagar. The musician has also tied up with five-time Grammy awardee Victor Wooten.Ghantam Karthik, as he his known as, was the prime disciple of Grammy Award winning Ghatam maestro, Padmasri Sri. T H Vikku Vinayakram and Ghatam wizard T H Subash Chandran. He has also travelled and performed across the world with his wonder pot, including the United Nations.As a creative composer, Dr Karthick has composed various genres of music, consisting of Tillanas, Kritis (both in Sanskrit and Tamil), a Pada Varnam, a Daru Varnam, Swarakshara Kriti, Ragamalika, instrumental orchestrations, devotional songs, hymns, romantic songs, folk songs etc.The Ghatam is key percussion instrument used in Carnatic music that has now gained prominent status in film music, Jugal-bandhis, fusion ensembles, rock and jazz.The concert will take place tomorrow at 6:45 pm at Hotel Avasa, located at Madhapur.
