MADURAI: Property worth Rs1.75 crore was recovered from a DMK councillor within two days since the filing of a land grabbing complaint with the police.According to city Police Commissioner P Kannappan, the victims were unable to claim ownership of their land for a long time, and the case was solved by the Anti-Land Grabbing Unit of the Central Crime Branch within two days.Around 54.5 cents of land in Jaihindpuram was usurped by the 52nd Ward Councillor, Malaichamy, in collusion with the relatives of the land owner who sold the land. The land was originally bought by one Rengasamy in 1937 after the will of his father was executed in 1920 giving equal shares to Rengasamy and his elder brother.Rengasamy, who wrote a will in 1993, sold the same land to seven persons which included four from a family and three others, including one Rajeshwari, in 1996. The land was fenced according to the portions of the purchaser. However, 13 wards of Rengasamy’s elder brother led by Samynathan had executed power of attorney for the land by forgery and claimed the ownership of the land in October 2010.Malaichamy had agreed to buy the land and had given the first instalment of `5 lakh out of the total agreed value of `20 lakh. Malaichamy using his influence had removed the fence and re-arranged the fencing poles to mark it in such a way to show that the entire expanse was owned by a single person. The victims approached Jaihindpuram police station with a complaint which was turned down stating that it was a civil case.Electricity supply to one of the plots owned by Rajeshwari was sought in 1998, and was not given till date. Meanwhile, Malaichamy had set up a shed in Subramanyapuram and shifted it to the plot in February. The electricity supply was furnished within 10 minutes after the shed was setup in the usurped land. Malaichamy had also registered a sale deed in his wife’s name. He had also put up a banner stating that the land belonged to him and his wife. The actual owners of the land, on seeing this, pressed Malaichamy and Samynathan to redeem the land on August 18, 2011. In response, the accused named in the complaint issued life threats to the victims. The victims then approached the Commissioner of Police who ordered an inquiry into the case.Inspector G Pethuraj of the Central Crime Branch, registered a case the same day and the prime accused Malaichamy and Samynathan were arrested. The next day, the victims were able to retrieve their land.
