Martyred in Kashmir, Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami awarded Ashok Chakra
Lance Naik Goswami exhibited most conspicuous gallantry in personally eliminating two terrorists and assisting in evacuation of his wounded colleagues.

Elite commando of the Army's Special Forces, Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami, who was killed in an operation in north Kashmir was awarded the Ashok Chakra, country's highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously.

"Goswami exhibited most conspicuous gallantry in personally eliminating two terrorists and assisting in evacuation of his wounded colleagues and made supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army," a government release said.

On the night of September 2, Goswami was part of an ambush in Haphruda forest at Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir.

When two of his comrades were injured and pinned down in a fierce encounter with four terrorists, he and another soldier rushed to their help risking their lives.

The government release said, "Sensing grave danger to three of his wounded colleagues, Lance Naik Mohan with utter disregard to his own personal safety, charged at the remaining terrorists drawing intense fire from them."

Goswami was severely injured in the thigh and abdomen, but he killed the last terrorist at point blank range before succumbing to his injuries.

Lance Naik Mohan not only killed two terrorists, but also assisted in neutralizing the other two and save the lives of three of his wounded colleagues.

In addition to the Ashok Chakra awarded to Lance Naik Goswami posthumously, Kirti Chakra has been awarded to Subedar Mahendra Singh of 9 PARA (Special Force) and posthumously to Sepoy Jagdish Chand of 546 DSC Platoon.
