CHENNAI: At a time when developing and sustaining the cultural mileau has been one of the greatest challenges of the century, Sruti Laya Kendra of Guru Karaikudi Mani (Mridangam maestro) has been fostering both home grown talents and talents residing abroad. It has created an awareness and understanding of our cultural heritage over the years. In this year’s festival at Asthika Samajam, Venus Colony, it featured violin duo of Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi who are adept in rendering soulful melody. When Vijayalakshmi embarked on Nataikurinji alapana (Kuvalaya Dhala Nayanam) of Thyagaraja with torrential swaras, we were reminded of their Guru and father Lalgudi Jayaraman, whose nimble fingering would instantly provide us with cascading music. Muruga – Muruga of Periswamy Thooran in Raga Saveri was presented with tantalising charm, essential for outlining Saveri Raga, without getting into volatile embellishment. The handling of Raga Rasikapriya (Arul Cheya Vendum) of Kooteswara Iyer with decorative movements of fingering, and exemplifying the melodic novelty of the Raga, revealed their artistic expertise. The Prahalada Bhakti Vijayam of Thyagaraja (Ennati Nomu) in Raga Bhairavi, where every swara and every phase was filled with Raga colours, was full of scintillating impulses. In this violin concert of Lalgudi clan, the eloquence of the instrumental expression, with matured handling, was melodious. Ramesh (Mridangam) was his usual self with soft beats keeping the required resonance, while N Govindarajan (Ghatam) won the hearts with his anticipatory sallies.
