Milk adulterated with chemicals sold openly

ATHANI: People of Athani taluk are hesitating to consume packet milk as chemicals mixed in these packets are being sold openly in the market.Though many consumers have complained to the department of food and civil supplies and the health departments, no action has been taken against the sellers.When the media reported such sale of chemicals mixed with milk last year, officials stopped the racket.However, it resumed within a few days.When Express contacted Tahsildar Sharanabasappa Koteppagol, he said he will conduct a meeting with the concerned officials shortly and issue proper directions to them.However, some officials opined that since the taluk magistrate has no power to control such deeds under the current laws, there is a need of amendment by the government immediately.Chemicals mixed in milkIt is a mixture of edible oil, maida floor, tooth paste and some chemicals which brightens the colour, solidity and flavour of the milk. By using 2 kg maida floor, 200 gram tooth paste, 2 kg edible oil, 5 litre milk in 100 litres of water, one can prepare 106 litres of milk which looks like good quality milk. In fact it is very dangerous to one’s health.It is said that this method was learnt by some milk producers of Maharashtra. It is alleged that some politicians are involved in such rackets in neighbouring states.
