BHUBANESWAR: Lawlessness seems to have become the order of the day in the City as was evident from an incident of firing in the crowded market of VSS Nagar on Wednesday evening. A youth, who had been captured by three locals for his high-handedness, opened fire on them. The bullet missed the target and went past the counter of a fast food joint. The persons, who were standing nearby, had a close shave. The incident happened at around 6 pm in the VSS Nagar market in full public glare. The area comes under Sahid Nagar police limits. Locals said the three local youths had captured the miscreant - whose identity is yet to be known - over a past feud. A few days back, the miscreant had bashed up brother-in-law of Baishnab Swain, one of the three youths. Swain, who had managed to remember the registration number of the miscreant’s motor bike, was looking for the latter. On Wednesday, he found the bike parked near a local liquor shop and caught hold of the miscreant. Swain and his two friends - Ashok Sahu and Bubu Swain - overpowered the miscreant and wanted to teach him a lesson. However, when the anti-social found an opportunity to free himself from their clutches, he whipped out a gun from his pocket and fired on Ashok when he challenged him. The bullet missed Ashok and went on to hit a chair placed near a fast food joint. Terrorising the rest, the miscreant fled the spot on the bike of his associate who was standing nearby. The incident shocked the locals. DCP Nitinjit Singh rushed to the spot with his team. Police quizzed the youths and seized the bullet lodged in the chair and the empty shell. The gun used appears to be a Mauser. There is no trace of the miscreant as yet. His name is believed to be Papu.
