Kolkata: Trinamool Congress legislator Sadhan Pande was suspended by the party on Thursday for his open support to the controversial Tata Motors small car factory at Singur.
The decision to suspend Pande, a six-time MLA, was taken by party chief Mamata Banerjee and endorsed by the Trinamool Congress Legislature Party at a meeting on Thursday.
"I am suspended because of speaking my mind. There was no debate on the Tata plant in the party. It was not discussed either. We badly need an automobile plant in Bengal," said Pande after he was suspended.
"No force can stop the Tata Motors' project at Singur. If I am called an agent of the Tatas, I don't mind. The IT sector alone cannot bail out the state or create employment, we need manufacturing units," he said making a strong argument for the plant at Singur.
Party leader Mamata Banerjee said: "Since the party line on Singur was clear the decision to suspend Pande was unanimous".
