BHUBANESWAR: Hours after Inspector Santosh Mallick, accused of molesting a nine-year- old girl in a train, escaped from police custody in front of Special Jail, Jharpada, he was arrested by Commissionerate Police on Sunday. Mallick’s escapade ended at about 4.30 am when police rounded him up in Laxmi Sagar area itself. Meanwhile, the two GRP constables, who had escorted the disgraced officer from the SDJM Court to the jail, have been suspended. Earlier, Mallick was suspended pending charges against him. On Friday night, Mallick was nabbed on the charge of molesting a minor girl in Sri Jagannath Express. He was handed over to the GRP at Puri. After his production at the SDJM Court in Bhubaneswar, he was remanded in judicial custody. However, at about 9 pm, while he was being taken to the jail, he gave the escort party the slip. The two constables, who escorted him, lodged an FIR with Laxmi Sagar Police and a manhunt was launched. Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh said police had set up blockades soon after the escape and it made Mallick’s plan to flee difficult. Eventually during the wee hours of Sunday, he landed in police net. Commissionerate Police had zeroed in on two things - the vehicle in which Mallick was brought to the prison and his two mobile numbers. Mallick being a police officer - an Inspector with Special Branch - the escort party did not handcuff him which it should have. Besides, the car used for his escort to SDJM Court from Khurda GRP Station too was a private vehicle which was arranged by Mallick himself. When the escort party arrived at the jail after his production before the court, someone from a second vehicle, which was following him, stepped out and asked Mallick to take a call. The accused took the opportunity and fled. After he escaped, sources informed Mallick switched off one of his mobile numbers but used second one which was not known to many. Commissionerate Police kept track of the number and detected his location. Mallick was produced before a court on Sunday by Laxmi Sagar Police for his escape. He was remanded in judicial custody.
