Mulayam loses plea, can't stop CBI
Supreme Court refuses UP Chief Minister’s plea to stop the agency from probing allegations against him till polls end.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to accept UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's plea to stop the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from probing allegations that he has illegal wealth till elections are over in the state.

Yadav had on Monday filed a piled a plea seeking a stay on the CBI probe. A bench headed by Justice A R Lakshmanan refused the plea but allowed Mulayam to file a petition against its March 1 order allowing the CBI to probe the allegations.

The court has allowed the CBI to probe allegations that Mulayam, his son Akilesh Yadav, daughter-in-law Dimple and another son Prateek had acquired assets worth crores using illegal means.

Mulayam, in his petition, had said that he did not trust the CBI and wanted an independent authority headed by retired judge of the Supreme Court or a High Court to probe the allegations.

The Samajwadi Party chief sought modification of the March 1 order on directing CBI inquiry against him and his family and submitted that the income tax department may be asked to proceed with the inquiry and only after that any further order be passed.
