Baig went on to say Islam does not permit the killing of any animal — even a goat — if it gives milk or has given birth.

Ahmedabad: Juhapura, one of the biggest Muslim-dominated areas in Gujarat, might soon have a gaushala (cow shelter).

The Muhibban-e-Ahle Bait foundation, an organisation that promotes Sufism, has sought an appointment with Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in connection with the matter. “We plan to set up the gaushala in association with Jain NGOs already working towards protection of cows,” Anwar Shaikh from the foundation told News18.Also Read: Yogi Adityanath's 'Favourite' Cows to Follow Him to His New Residence

The intention behind the exercise of setting up a gaushala at Juhapura is to send out a message to those who want to create controversies under the name of cow protection,” Shaikh said.

But not everybody in Juhapura is upbeat about the proposal. Local leader Mirza Haji Asrar Baig, who is also the area’s municipal councillor, said: “Muslims running a gaushala or keeping cattle, including cows, is not new in Gujarat and other places. My in-laws at Nimach in Madhya Pradesh have dozens of cows. But what troubles me is people trying to gain political mileage out of such acts. There are hundreds of people in Juhapura who do not get clean drinking water. ‘Janwaron ka raajkaaran chhodo…. Insaano ko paani pilaao. Woh jyaada zaruri hai’ (focus on humans before animals).”

Baig went on to say Islam does not permit the killing of any animal — even a goat — if it gives milk or has given birth.

“Only those animals which are not capable of giving birth are permitted to be killed. It is good to take care of animals, but I just hope these people show as much concern for humans staying in Juhapura as well,” Baig told News18.
