CHENNAI: The State government on Wednesday shifted Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, from the Puzhal Central Prison here to the Vellore jail.“According to her request, she wants to spend some time with her husband, Murugan, who is at the Vellore prison and is a death row convict in the same case. So, we have shifted Nalini,” said S K Dogra, Additional DGP, to Express.In the wake of the President of India rejecting the mercy petitions of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, Nalini applied to the prison authorities requesting to shift her to the Vellore prison so that she can spend time with her husband.“We forwarded her requested to the government. Following the approval of the government, we have shifted her to Vellore prison,” said Dogra. “Nalini will be lodged in the women’s prison and as per the procedure, we will allow her to meet her husband,” he added.It is worth recalling that Nalini was moved from the Vellore prison last year to the Puzhal jail after she complained that prison officials at Vellore were harassing her and that she feared for her life.Murugan was among the three convicts who were to be executed on September 9 for the assassination of former Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. An appeal against the hanging is being considered by the Madras High Court. Murugan and the others have said that the President took 11 years to reject their mercy petitions, which sought to change their punishment to life imprisonment.Meanwhile, the State government also passed a resolution in the State Assembly to commute the death penalty for the trio in the case.
