BANGALORE: Schools will remain closed in most parts of the state on Thursday in view of the nation-wide bandh called for by the NDA and Left parties against the recent hike in petrol prices.Various exams scheduled for Thursday across the state have also beenpostponed. In Bangalore, Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPI) of Bangalore North, South and Rural zones have declared a holiday for schools in the interest of students’safety.“The loss of duty and classes will be compensated on the following Saturday by working full day,” said Bangalore North DDPI T C Chandraiah. The Department of PU Education, however, has not declared an official holiday.“We request students and parents to check with their respective PU colleges before leaving their homes,” said a PU Board official. In Mangalore, though an official announcement was not made, students have been advised to stay away.In Shimoga, while there was no official holiday declared for government schools, private schools are said to have declared a holiday. However, public transport will not be affected as services of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) across the state and Bangalore Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (BMTC) in Bangalore will be operational.BMTC officials said that there would be no change in routes, schedules or number of buses.“BMTC bus services run as usual. However, buses will be suspended in areas that see violence,” an official said.KSRTC director (Operations) Ashok Kumar said services will be operational and that a call would be taken in case of any violence.Autorickshaws will also ply on Bangalore’s streets on Thursday, as the cause of the bandh does not really concern them.“We have not taken much interest in this bandh as it does not concern gas prices.Autos will be available. Only 20 per cent of drivers may not work on Thursday,” said M Manjunath, president of Adarsha Auto Union.
