New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation in the case involving J&K cop Davinder Singh who was held with militants in south Kashmir while ferrying two militants to Jammu, officials said.
The development comes just days after the Union Home Ministry asked the NIA to initiate the process of probing the case.
Singh, posted as the deputy superintendent of police, was arrested on January 11 along with Naveed Babu, self-styled district commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, a new recruit Atif and an advocate Irfan Mir. Babu was wanted for the murder of 11 civilians, including migrant labourers, truck drivers and fruit merchants, after the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August.
The four were caught with arms and ammunition while they were travelling in a car near Qazigund on the national highway in south Kashmir.
Five grenades were seized from the vehicle and raids at Singh's house later led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, two pistols and two grenades, besides lakh of rupees. the J&K Police had later confirmed that no other senior police officer had been found guilty of conspiring against India or aiding terrorists.
The disgraced cop has been in news earlier too as he was named by Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in his letter in 2013. In the letter, Guru had said how "DSP Davinder Singh", the then deputy superintendent of police of Special Operations Group, had asked him to "take Mohammad", a co-accused in the Parliament attack case, "to Delhi, rent a flat for his stay and purchase a car for him". Singh's arrest, while accompanying two wanted terrorists to Jammu days before the Republic Day, has again raised the questions posed by Guru.
The DSP was posted with the anti-hijacking unit at Srinagar Airport and was one of the officials that received the 16-member delegation of foreign ambassadors which visited Kashmir on Thursday.
