CHENNAI: It was an occasion to celebrate for the inmates of the Christ Faith Home for Children here at Manapakkam near Nandambakkam on Thursday, when one of them, Vijaya, was given away in marriage to Suresh of Chengelpet. There was happiness all around as everyone played their part in the wedding. The inmates and the staff of the home recalled how Vijaya was brought here when she was eight years old by her grandmother, Kozhandaiamma, after her parents died. Vijaya is now 24 years old and holds a diploma in beautician course. So, when the topic of marriage came up, three proposals were discussed to finalise one of them. Finally, Suresh (28), a differently-abled man with an ITI diploma and a job in a private company, was chosen and the couple got engaged in November last year. Every inmate in this home is considered as one’s own children. Vijaya was gifted household items required to run a family and every function leading to the wedding was celebrated. The ‘Progressive Wedding’ was attended by B Valarmathi, Minister for Social Welfare, CR Saraswathi, Chairperson, Social Welfare Board, Councillor Pandian and Block Councillor Kamaraj. The children’s home was started in 1985 by Maida Raja. It provides sustainable support to more than 65 socially underprivileged, less advantaged, deserted and helpless children apart from destitute women.Maida Raja was visibly happy when she said Vijaya’s and Suresh’s marriage was the 14th wedding in their home. “This is the first time that a differently-abled person is marrying our girl. Thirteen such weddings have taken place in our home earlier. One of the couples is living in Singapore and another one in Denmark,” she said. Maida said weddings in the home are organised the same way like how parents would do it for their children. The couples are showered with gifts here. The home will also help Vijaya and her husband find a house to settle down.
