BANGALORE: The Election Commission of India on Friday issued notification to hold election to fill eleven vacancies in the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Assembly on June 11.The last date for filing nomination is June 1, and the scrutiny of nomination papers would be done the next day. June 4 will be the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Four members each from the BJP, and the Congress and three from the JD (S) are retiring from the Council on June 21.The four BJP members include G Janardhana Reddy, who is in judicial custody in connection with the illegal mining case. The others are Deputy Chairperson of the Council Vimala Gowda, Thontadarya and D S Veeraiah. From the Congress, Opposition leader in the Council Motamma, K C Kondaiah, Khaji Arshad Ali and V R Sudarshan are retiring from the council.Abdul Azeem, Chickamadu and H C Neeravari are the JD (S) members, who are completing their six-year term.In the 225-member Karnataka Assembly, the ruling BJP with its present strength of 120 members, including the Speaker, can win six seats easily and will fall short of 13 votes to win the seventh seat.The Congress, with 71 MLAs, can manage to get three seats and will have a surplus of 14 votes. The JD(S), which has 26 members in the Assembly, can win one seat and will have surplus votes of seven. There are seven independent members in Assembly. For victory, each member has to secure a minimum of 19 votes, and with the surplus of 14 votes in its kitty the Congress may field the fourth candidate expecting support from six independents.
