London: US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle forged a special relationship with Prince William and his wife Catherine during their visit to the Buckingham Palace.

Arriving for a three-day State visit, America's first couple struck up an immediate rapport with the young newlyweds, who are just back from their honeymoon.

Mrs Obama beamed as she met a smiling Duchess of Cambridge, while the President chatted amiably with William.

Earlier the visitors were given a warm welcome on the steps of the palace by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip. The American couple towered over their royal hosts.

In the afternoon, President Obama laid a wreath at Westminster Abbey in honour of the war dead. Then he had a brief discussion with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The two leaders will have wide-ranging talks covering bilateral and international issues on Wednesday.

William and Kate greeted the Obamas in the grand 1844 room of Buckingham Palace at the start of the US state visit to the UK.

It was the first time Kate had undertaken a role as a member of the royal family since her wedding.

There were no television cameras or reporters in the room for the meeting.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said the couples spent around 20 minutes together, chatting informally.
