New Delhi: Several students seeking admission in the OBC category have turned out disappointed at Delhi University's Ramjas college, and have alleged discrepancies in admissions.

A number of student groups on Monday held protest outside the college and took up the issue with the authorities, asking them to ensure uniformity in taking admissions.

Several students from the reserved category have alleged that the college was admitting all students who meet a particular cut off requirement in the General category but was not applying the same policy for OBC students.

Students, teachers and activists, mainly from Leftist organisations staged a protest outside the college before marching on to the Dean Student's Welfare Office.

When a college declares a cut-off list, it is expected to provide admission to all students who meet that requirement even if it means admitting over the sanctioned strength of seats.

However, some students applying in the reserved category have alleged that a 'merit list' was released for the OBC candidates to restrict their admissions to the sanctioned strength while general students were not subjected to such criteria.

"A number of students have told us that they were encountering discrepancies in admissions. While the college is over admitting in the general category, it is restricting the admissions of students in the OBC category," said Abha Dev Habib, a teacher at Miranda House, who attended the protest.

The activists alleged that while reservation is provided only in proportion to the number of sanctioned seats, the actual intake of general category students was turning out to be higher than sanctioned seats in proportion.

"This is against the principle of reservation," said a student.
