Karachi: Pakistan police have arrested two persons for the kidnapping and murder of a Hindu businessman and fear the killing could be part of a campaign by the banned Harkat-ul-Mujahideen terror outfit to target Hindus in Sindh province.
Police in the Kotri town of Sindh near Hyderabad city discovered the body of Garesh Kumar from a Islamic religious school on Wednesday.
They arrested Khadim Hussain and his son Tahir who they suspect of working for the banned outfit, which is active in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kumar was kidnapped six months ago from his home in Hyderabad by unknown people, the police said.
"We found his body after intense investigations. The killers beheaded him and then burnt him before burying him," a senior police official, Mustafa Korai, said.
Mustafa added they were investigating claims made by the arrested men, who had said that they were inspired by an active member of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen to kidnap and kill Hindus.
"We are trying to find out if they are anymore such cases. But until now we are going by the statements made by the arrested men. We are also hunting for the main accused who brainwashed them," Mustafa said.
A majority of the over 2 million Pakistani Hindus live in Sindh with many of them involved in trade. Police said Kumar was the son of a well-known trader.
"At first we though he had been kidnapped for ransom but no demands were made from his family after the kidnapping last August and we got suspicious of other motives behind the crime," the official said.
