The Supreme Court on February 10 awarded one-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each, overturning the High Court verdict, to R Balakrishnan Pillai and two others in the Idamalayar case. The Supreme Court verdict came on an appeal filed by V S Achuthanandan (the then Opposition Leader) against the High Court verdict. On February 16, Idamalayar special court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Pillai. The police did not execute the arrest warrant against second convict, Ramabhadran Nair, 81, who was in Thiruvananthapuram as he was in dementia. He died on December 4. Pillai surrendered before the Idamalayar Special Court to serve the jail term on February 18.He filed a writ petition in the apex court seeking an open hearing of his review plea and also open arguments in open court on February 28. The Supreme Court dismissed Pillai’s review petition on March 9. Pillai was  freed under the remission granted by the state government on the occasion of state-formation day on November 1.
