CHENNAI: A writ plea praying for a direction to the TN State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure a free and fair election to the local bodies, to be held on October 17 and 19, has been made in the Madras High Court.A vacation bench consisting of Justices D Hariparanthaman and GM Akbar Ali, before which the public interest writ petition from advocate G Poonkunran of Thiruvanmiyur came up on Tuesday, ordered notice to the SEC, returnable on October 13. Petitioner’s senior counsel P Wilson said SEC S Ayyar’s association with AIADMK  raised a suspicion about his impartiality. When Ayyar was posted as MD of TASMAC during AIADMK’s previous rule, he had abused his position and had favoured Midas Golden Distilleries, run by Sasikala, a close associate of CM J Jayalalithaa. His posting as SEC, when other officials were available, strengthened the suspicion. Petitioner had sent representations on September 6 and 17 to the SEC suggesting various measures to ensure a fair election. But there was no response. Hence, the petition to follow the procedures adopted during the recent Assembly elections.
