CHERUTHONI: In a major relief to thousands of residents in the downstream of the Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said his government will take all possible measures to sort out the Mullaperiyar issue in an amicable way. In yet another bonanza, the Chief Minister declared that all land owners who had held their land before January 1, 1977, will be issued pattayam.He was speaking at the final phase of the chief minister’s mass contact programme held at Vazhathopp near Cheruthoni in Idukki on Thursday. “We will go ahead with the slogan of ‘Water for Tamil Nadu and Safety for Kerala’. We have been continuously trying our best to resolve the issue. The government hopes to solve the issue soon,” said Chandy.He also pointed out that the excess land, acquired for the hydro-electrical project, will be handed over to farmers. “This will be a beneficial programme for a large number of farmers. The government is committed to resolve the pattayam issues in Idukki district. All land owners, who hold their land before January 1, 1977 will surely get pattayam.” said Chandy.Claiming that the mass contact programme was a huge success, Chandy said that over 5,41,000 applicants got aid from this programme so far. The chief minister examined and resolved 35,888 applications, which had been filed earlier in various departments, through 18 counters set up in the school premises. Apart from this, he took fresh applications too.
