A day after PRP Exports shareholder P R Palanichamy was arrested for illegal quarrying activities in Melur, 38 lorries, which did not have proper registration numbers, operated by the granite major, were seized by the district administration on Sunday.
While 30 of the vehicles did not have any registration numbers, eight had identical registration numbers.
Based on directions from the Collector, the Regional Transport Officer, Madurai North, seized the vehicles and registered a case against the lorry owners.
The vehicles were parked on the premises of the company when the special teams tasked with probing the violations by the granite major spotted them. The officials expressed shock over the fact that several vehicles did not have any registration numbers.
Police also broke open the seal at PRP Exports and seized several incriminating documents in the presence of Palanichamy.
Meanwhile, a local court on Sunday remanded Palanichamy in judicial custody for 12 days.
The court also rapped the police for producing him 24 hours after his arrest, violating Supreme Court guidelines.
