Railway freight earnings go up by 12.34 per cent
Railways have generated Rs 38,292.04 crore of revenue from freight traffic.

New Delhi: Railways have generated Rs 38,292.04 crore of revenue from freight traffic during the first ten months of the current financial year as compared to Rs 34,087.14 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 12.34 per cent.

Railways carried 643.70 million tonnes of freight traffic during April 2007 to January 2008 as compared to 593.67 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 8.43 per cent.

The earnings from freight traffic during the month of January this year was Rs 4,534.15 crore, compared to Rs 3844.30 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 17.94 per cent.

It carried 72.35 million tonnes of freight traffic during the month of January 2008 as compared to 65.74 million tones of freight during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 10.05 per cent.

Of the total earnings during the month of January, Rs 1,681.31 crore came from transporting 30.65 million tones of coal, followed by Rs 745.28 crore from transporting 12.26 million tonnes of iron ore and Rs 377.56 crore from 3.99 million tonnes of food grains, according to a Press release.

Railways earned Rs 375.47 crore from 7.24 million tones of cement, Rs 249.41 crore from 2.39 million tonnes of iron and finished steel, Rs 254.94 crore from 3.06 million tones of petroleum oil and lubricant, Rs 214.35 crore from 3.24 million tonnes of fertilisers, Rs 182.17 crore from 2.45 million tonnes of container service, Rs 74.70 crore from 1.07 million tonnes of raw materials for steel plants and Rs 378.96 crore from six million tonnes of other goods.
