Moderate to heavy downpour in last one week in Chhattisgarh's Korba district has affected coal production in the open cast mines at Korba, Kusmunda, Deepka, and Gevra region of SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Ltd).

Coal production of approximately 45,000 tonnes was affected due to the rain. It however, did not affect the supply, officials said.

Heavy rainfall in last 4-5 days made it difficult to unearth coal from open cast mines due to water accumulation in the mines in four regions of SECL, Chief Personnel Manager and Public Relation Officer, SECL Korba Anil Kumar said.

"The average per day coal production of 45,000 tonnes was affected due to rains. However, less production will not affect the supply of coal to power plants as we have stock," he said.

The worst affected is Manikpur project in Korba region where water has been pooled in the entire mine area, Kumar said, adding, efforts were on to release the water through motor pumps, he added.

Coal production is unaffected in the underground mines of the region, he said.
