Rape protests: Tomar's death raises many questions
Police maintain that Tomar was assaulted by the protesters. An eyewitness and a doctor have contradicted the police version.

New Delhi: The death of Delhi Police constable Subhash Tomar, who had collapsed during the crackdown on anti-gangrape protesters at Delhi's Indian Gate on Sunday, and the different versions about the entire incident has raised several questions. While Delhi Police officials maintain that Tomar was assaulted by the protesters and suffered severe injuries, a man claiming to be an eyewitness and a doctor, who had examined the policeman after he was brought to the hospital, have made statements contradicting the police version.

The post mortem report of Tomar says that he had suffered serious injuries and a few of his ribs were fractured before the heart-attack. The report says Tomar suffered serious ante-mortem injuries. Tomar had myocardial infarction and its complication that could be precipitated by ante mortem injuries to neck and chest produced by blunt force impact. The report also says that effusion of blood was present in soft tissues and muscles of neck.

Yongendra, a journalism student, claims he was present when the constable collpased and says he did notice any injury marks on Tomar's body. Medical Superintendent at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, S Sidhu, also said that no major external injury marks were found on the body of the deceased constable and that he suffered a knee injury and a chest bruise. He added that Tomar had already suffered a cardiac arrest before he was brought to the hospital.

Tomar's death and the controversy surrounding it has raised several questions.

Are Delhi Police officials trying to discredit the anti-rape protesters by blaming them for a policeman's death?

Even if Tomar suffered a cardiac attack, could it not have been due to the fact that he and his colleagues were involved in the crackdown?

Is it possible that Tomar may have been assaulted by one group of protesters and another group may have helped him?

While the post mortem report contradicts the eyewitnesses and RML doctor, why did the hospital say that he had not suffered any severe internal injury?

(We will answer all the above questions as and when we get answers to them)
