Meanwhile, Sony's dance show Jhalak Dikhla Ja based on popular American Television show Dancing with the stars, pairs a celebrity with a choreographer and if they please the judges and get the audience grooving, they get to go home with a cool rupees Rs 50 lakh.

“The reality genre extends from various genres because it has to do not with people playing characters, it has a draw of its own,” says producer Siddharth Basu, who is currently producing Jhalak Dikhla Ja.

"If the platform is credible, the biggest prize you get is the platform itself but if your new then you have to give a much bigger prize, say money or a car," says Vice President of Corporate Communications, Zee Telefilms, Ashish Kaul.

For instance, the show Indian Idol garnered a very high viewership and also reportedly recorded Rs 5.5 crore votes for its first winner Abhijeet Sawant.

Sawant's debut album sold more than nine lakh copies - a record five-year high, making him a household name.

"At the end of the day, the reward has to be large enough for people to appreciate it and love it, Indian Idol did that, it made Abhijit Sawant famous,” says Chief Executive Officer of Indiantelevision.com, Anil Wanvari.

The TRPs may have dropped for the second season of many reality shows but their is no stopping the channels from starting new ones.

The next big show claiming to be the Father of all reality shows is Sony's Big Boss.
