BALASORE: The Odisha Constable, Havildar and Sepoy Mahasangha has threatened an agitation to protest suspension of six cops in the aftermath of Chandaneswar Chadak Mela lathicharge incident, earlier this month.Mahasangha president Padmanav Behera said they would resort to ceasework if the police administration did not revoke suspension of the cops in a month.“The Chief Minister has ordered a RDC probe into the incident. Why were they then suspended before the report was submitted?” he questioned. A day after the alleged lathicharge and police-devotee clash that left 50 injured, havildar Raju Kisan, sepoys Suresh Pradhan, Satyanarayan Behera, Chitta Ranjan Srichandan, Jhumura Sethi and driver Kailash Behera were placed under suspension. The Mahasangha, however, blamed the administration and managing trust board of Chandaneswar temple for the incident. There are no specific guidelines for the devotees who assemble for the annual festival, he alleged, adding that the police were doing their duty.Behera said the devotees attacked the police who tried to stop them from abusing a girl. They also tried to loot the arms and ammunition which led the cops to chase them, he added. As many as 22 cops, including two DSPs, were injured even as the mob torched a police vehicle and ransacked nearby shops. The Mahasangha said the six cops have been made scapegoats. “We will meet the Director-General of Police and resort to ceasework if the orders are not revoked,” Behera said.
