Mumbai: A chief engineer has died and three others have sustained injuries in a minor fire onboard aircraft carrier INS Viraat on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place when the aircraft carrier was on a routine deployment to Goa. The fire broke out in one of its boiler rooms after leakage of steam.
Soon after the incident sailors rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
Unfortunately, four sailors suffered severe injuries after inhaling smoke. One of them Ashu Singh (Chief Engineering Mechanic) died in the mishap.
Ashu was shifted to the naval hospital at Goa where he suffered a cardiac arrest and succumbed to his injury.
"His family members were informed. The other three are under treatment and out of danger. Prima facie, some insulating material in the boiler room appears to have caught fire from heat due to steam leak. We are investigating the incident," sources said.
INS Viraat is expected to sail back to Mumbai soon.
