Patna: Reeling under acute power crisis, the Bihar government has expedited process to find out a viable site for construction of the proposed nuclear power plant in the state, an official said on Thursday. "We have expedited the process for identification of a suitable land keeping in mind the availability of perennial water for the proposed nuclear power plant," Bihar State Power Company Limited (BSPCL) Managing Director PK Rai said.

A 3000-acre land was identified at Rajauli in Nawada district for the project keeping in view the availability of water from Phulwaria reservoir for two units and the same for another two units from the proposed Dharajay reservoir, he said. The site at Rajauli, however, did not find favour with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) which asked the state government to shortlist some other viable sites, Rai said.

The consultants are at work to find out other probable sites at Kursela in Katihar district and places in Lakhisarai and Banka districts for the proposed nuclear power plant, the BSPCL MD said. The availability of abundance of water was key to finalisation of the site in this regard, Rai said, adding that it will also be kept in mind that the identified land should be non-fertile in view of the state government's stand to discourage acquisition of fertile land, he said.

Meanwhile, the CPI (M-L) has vowed to oppose construction of nuclear power in Bihar. "We are firmly opposed to nuclear power plant as a matter of concern in view of the threat to environment and health of the people," the CPI (M-L) Liberation state unit secretary Kumar Parvez said.
