SAMBALPUR: Former MP Sriballav Panigrahi has urged the Centre to dissociate itself from the controversial, Sindol hydro power project and impressed upon the Union Power Minister to direct National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) to cancel the MoU signed with OHPC. Panigrahi said the declaration of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in 2004 that the proposed project was shelved was an attempt to win the Rairakhol Assembly by-election. Panigrahi expressed surprise at the State Government going ahead with the project without taking locals into confidence.Explaining that the contention of the State Energy Minister that reduction of the height of the dam by two meters will not cause submergence and displacement is far from convincing, the former MP said different versions had been put forth on the issue from time to time adding to the confusions of people. The ongoing agitation amply demonstrates disapproval of the project by the people. It is high time, the Government read the writing on the wall and bid ‘goodbye’ to the project once and for all, added the three-time MP.
