CHENNAI: A Japanese ship Fuji Maru, carrying a contingent of over 270 youth of various nationalities, as part of the ‘Ship for World Youth’ (SWY) programme, being run by the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, docked in the Chennai Port on Sunday.The 24th edition of the programme, which involves youth of Japan and various nationalities, has been aimed at providing an on-board living experience that could make a world of difference for the youngsters.“It is great fun and a learning experience as well for the youths of different races and continents,” Parul Baru, one of the representatives from India for the onboard programme told City Express.“Though all arrangements inside the ship are good, non-Japanese colleagues faced difficulties in having food, as only Japanese dishes were served. Most of the participants were not accustomed to these dishes,” she added.On January 31, the ship left Yokahama Port carrying 140 youths from Japan and another 132 from 12 other countries like India, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Venezuela.The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), an autonomous organisation of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has been designated by the Ministry as the official host of the 24th ‘Ship for World Youth’ (SWY) programme during their stay in India.During their first day of the three-day stay in Chennai, the participants would visit different places of educational importance in the city. On the second day, they would visit Rajiv Gandhi Memorial at Sriperumbudur and also visit about seven villages in Kanchipuram district to get first-hand experience about the villages and local governance.On the third day, the participants would visit different places including the Chennai Corporation’s headquarters — the Ripon Building.In the next leg, the ship will visit Colombo on a four-day visit from February 19 and eventually complete the 35-day programme back in Tokyo on March 5.
