CHENNAI: At the age of five, he drew the image of Gautama Buddha on a blank board using a piece of chalk. And at 12, he contributed a rich of body work to the Madras Art Club. Meet Thota Tharrani, the renowned artist and an art director who will be showcasing his masterstrokes that have helped the artist establish his own space in the rarefield world of art. Three shows in three different galleries will be held from December 15 to 23.Says Shailaja from Art and Soul gallery, “In order to retrace Thota Tharrani’s creative steps, he himself has picked out some career-defining canvasses from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition is titled, Thota Tharrani: Timeline – The Evolution of Perception and will be inaugurated on December 15.” The works include retrospective traces of a prolific career with approximately 50 works spanning over four decades of his early interventions, powerful sketches in his initial years, abstract drawings and theme-based paintings. In an endeavour to transmit the presence of the artist and make his historical works accessible to a larger audience, three art galleries – Focus Art Gallery, Lalit Kala Akademi and Art and Soul Gallery, OMR, have come together to showcase the artworks. Thota Tharrani, who has worked in films including Chandramukhi, Shivaji and Mudhalavan is also popular for his live painting. On December 19, at the Dutchess Club, a live painting by Tharrani will also be organised. At the Lalit Kala Akademi, the journey of the artist through his pencil drawing and abstract sketches will be showcased. At the Art and Soul gallery, his Script Series calligraphic form will be displayed and at Focus Art Gallery and his artworks, based on Rajasthan series, will be showcased. Also the latest Tharrani’s take on Texas, as part of the US series, through the eyes of the Indian artist will also be featured.
